Public
foreshore
The public domain is the first part of the Blackwattle Bay redevelopment to move into detailed planning – because we want to open up the water's edge to the community as early as possible, and we'd love your input to help shape it.
The designs below are proposals that will continue to evolve as we move through the planning process and hear more from our stakeholders and the broader community.
Our vision is to reconnect people with the harbour through a generous public foreshore that draws on the natural character of Blackwattle Bay. The proposed design creates a variety of spaces along the water's edge – places to walk, pause, gather and enjoy the bay.
What's proposed along the foreshore?
Natural edge
The proposed foreshore promenade features a natural sandstone edge that steps down toward the water, reflecting the site's topography and tidal character. It is designed to strengthen the connection between land and harbour.
Pedestrian boardwalk
A proposed over-water boardwalk would provide a vital link between the site and Bank Street Park beneath the Anzac Bridge, completing the long-missing link in Sydney's 15-kilometre foreshore walk from Rozelle Bay to Woolloomooloo.
Bridge connection
A proposed bridge connection celebrates the old watercourse that once ran from Wattle Street to Blackwattle Bay, maintaining a natural separation between the precinct and the Sydney Fish Market while keeping the site's natural systems visible.
Connection to water
The proposed design offers a mix of active and quieter spaces along the water's edge, using a cascading landscape that draws people toward the harbour. Proposed marine restoration works, in partnership with SIMS, aim to improve the ecological health of the bay.
Proposed foreshore design
Around 26,000 square metres of proposed new public space is planned for the precinct – including the creation of an 'outdoor living room' for the community that would reconnect this part of Sydney Harbour for the first time in generations.
As part of the proposed foreshore design, we've been working with the community to explore ideas including:
- Green spaces, planting and trees
- Walkability and connectivity
- Water recreation
- Events and activations
- Family and kid-friendly activities
- Public art and culture
- Safety and lighting
- Seating and comfort
- Workshops and education
If any of these resonate, or there is something else you would like to see in the public spaces at Blackwattle Bay, we would love to hear from you.
